LAS VEGAS - Leaders of the Commercial Alliance Las Vegas (CALV) recognize how few opportunities exist for commercial real estate (CRE) professionals to find relevant education specific to their industry. So, they’ve decided to do something about it, offering an increasing number of classes designed specifically for CRE professionals in Nevada.
One example of the group’s commitment to this cause is its 17th annual CALV Educational Symposium, being held Sept. 12 at the Orleans Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. This year’s symposium includes classes offering crucial continuing education (CE) credits for local real estate professionals, a panel discussion featuring several local industry experts and a presentation about the economy and the CRE market from Brian Gordon, of Applied Analysis.
CALV President Christopher McGarey, CCIM (Certified Commercial Investment Member) and a Certified Property Manager (CPM®), said real estate licensees in Nevada are required to complete a specific number of CE credits each year to maintain their state real estate license.
“Unfortunately for those of us who specialize in commercial real estate, almost all of the available classes are traditionally designed for residential agents, people who buy and sell houses,” he said. “One of our big goals at CALV is to offer more classes designed specifically for people who work in the commercial side of the industry.”
CALV is hosting the symposium from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. CALV is offering six hours of CE credits for real estate professionals attending the afternoon panel discussion and a morning class taught by nationally known commercial real estate instructor Patricia Lynn, CCIM.
The panel discussion is titled “Unlocking Value: Exploring Trends and Techniques in Office, Land and Multifamily Commercial.” It features industry experts Tio DiFederico, MIA, president of DiFederico Group; Buck Hujabre, senior vice president of the MDL Group; CALV Treasurer Wes Drown, CCIM, broker associate at RE/MAX Commercial; Devin Lee, CCIM, director of multifamily and investments at Northcap Multifamily; former CALV President Hayim Mizrachi, CCIM and CMG, principal, CEO and broker at MDL Group; and Matthew J. Nelson, CCIM, CLS, vice president of brokerage services at J.A. Kennedy Real Estate Company.
McGarey said CALV is “committed to offering more first-class education designed specifically for commercial real estate professionals.”
As part of its continued effort to support the entire commercial real estate sector, he said CALV also obtained state approval to offer continuing education at the event for Nevada appraisers.
“We’re building a faculty and curriculum that will fulfill the Nevada Real Estate Division’s (NVRED) full requirements for license renewal, which will benefit all CRE licensees in Nevada. Currently, NVRED requires all licensees to complete 36 hours of continuing education every two years, with half of these hours being live, whether classroom or Zoom,” added CALV Director and Education Chair Karen Ashby Thomas, CCIM.
Participants can register for the symposium at CALV.org or at the event. All-day admission is $99 for members of CALV or affiliated local organizations, including the local chapters of the Appraisal Institute (AI); BOMA (Building Owners and Managers Association); CCIM (Certified Commercial Investment Member); CREW (Commercial Real Estate Women); IREM (Institute of Real Estate Management); NAIOP Southern Nevada; Nevada State Apartment Association (NVSAA); and SIOR (Society of Industrial and Office Realtors®).
