'Recessions roots': Increasing prices impacting Las Vegas hairstylist's income, client traffic

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) - Pampering yourself may seem like a luxury, and now many women can’t keep up with the costs.

As economic times and tariffs weigh in on finances for business owners and clients, FOX5 is hearing the term “recession roots” or “recession hair.”

“I have such a passion for hair, makeup and styling, but I have to be realistic,” said Justine Hall, owner of Moonlit Beauty.

The reality for Hall is that clients have been hard to come by.

“It started about a month ago, and my books have been dwindling since. I am trying to hold on,” Hall said.

When FOX5 visited Hall at a North Las Vegas salon she rents out of, Rachel Kopetz was in her chair.

“A trim for me costs $100. That’s just not affordable. I’m used to $20 to $40 for half of an inch cut off so the prices have skyrocketed,” Kopetz said.

Kopetz tells FOX5 this was her first hair cut in a year as she does her best to DIY at home.

As clients try to take cost-cutting measures, Hall is trying to process the sticker shock.

“I used to pay maybe $7 to $8 for some products, now they are $15. When you are using multiple products for clients, especially hair dye, what used to cost me $30 in goods is costing me $60 to $70,” Hall said. “I used to be known for my prices being really good and now my prices are really reflecting the tariffs.”

Hall tells FOX5 she had to raise her prices 25% to offset some of those costs coming from tariffs. It’s taken a toll on her appointment book.

Those tariffs have now caused what Hall is referring to as “recession roots.” As her customers who usually come in for color treatment have not been able to keep up with it due to prices increasing.

“I used to have two days off. Now, I have five days off,” Hall said. “The rent here is due. The rent at my house is due. I feel like I can’t really catch a break.”

Hall tells FOX5 she is trying to see how the next three weeks will go. If she is not able to get steady clients to come in then, she will opt to get a second job.
